Hormone Highlight: ESTROGEN (By: Dr. Emily Gale, ND)

Estrogen is a sex hormone that is primarily produced by the ovaries in menstruating people, and by the adrenal glands and fat cells in post-menopausal people. We want to have a natural rise in this hormone during the first half of the menstrual cycle to stimulate tissue and blood in the uterus.
Issues can arise when our estrogen becomes out of balance with progesterone. This can be due to estrogen levels that are too high or too low. In my practice, I more commonly see issues with estrogen being too high, which can result in symptoms including mid cycle spotting, heavy and/or painful periods, breast tenderness, and mood disturbances to name a few. Some causes of high estrogen include:
1. Xenoestrogens - These are environmental compounds that mimic estrogen and can be found in plastics, pesticides, and cosmetics.
2. Stress - Our stress hormone cortisol is made from the same compound as progesterone, leading to relatively high estrogen in the body.
3. Poor Detoxification - Our liver function, microbiome, and regular bowel movements are necessary to properly detoxify estrogen and prevent recirculation in our system.
4. Alcohol Consumption - Research has found alcohol to increase estrogen consumption in our body.
5. Nutrient Deficiencies - Zinc, magnesium, and B6 play a big role in the metabolism of estrogen.
6. Lifestyle - Exercise, sleep, and nutrition all play a role in our hormone production and levels.
If you are struggling with your periods, it may be worth taking a deeper look into your estrogen production and detoxification to see what's going on!
